Transmission Fitment Guide
Transmissions have multiple variants even within the same year/make/model — automatic vs manual, different gear counts, valve body configurations, and electronics. This checklist helps you gather what we need to match the exact unit for your vehicle.
1) Get the basics
- Year / Make / Model
- Transmission type (if known): Automatic, Manual, CVT, or Dual-Clutch (DCT)
- Engine size: transmissions often vary by engine — a V6 and a 4-cylinder in the same model may use completely different units
- ZIP code for freight shipping options
2) VIN is best (strongly recommended)
Your VIN lets us verify the exact factory configuration — gear count, valve body type, electronics, and build codes. This prevents mismatches, especially on vehicles where the transmission varies by engine or option package. You can usually find your VIN:
- On the driver-side dashboard near the windshield
- On the driver door jamb sticker
- On your registration/insurance documents
3) Helpful details (if you have them)
- Engine size / trim: a 2.5L and a 3.5L in the same model year often use different transmissions with different gear counts and torque ratings.
- Drivetrain: FWD vs AWD vs 4WD — affects the transmission output configuration and may change which unit fits.
- Transmission ID tag / build code: often a metal tag or sticker on the transmission case itself. If you or your mechanic can read it, it speeds up verification significantly.
- Number of gears: if you know whether it’s a 6-speed, 8-speed, 10-speed, etc., that helps narrow the match.
- Symptoms: slipping, hard shifting, delayed engagement, grinding, fluid leak, check engine light codes, etc. (helps us ask the right questions).
4) Want photos of the exact unit?
When available, we can request photos and ID details from the supplier before purchase. Add “photos requested” in your notes when you submit the quote form.
5) Shipping tips
- Transmissions are drained of all fluids, palletized, and shipped via insured freight carrier.
- Repair shop / commercial delivery is usually the fastest and simplest option for freight.
- If shipping to a residence, ask about liftgate or terminal pickup options.
- Inspect freight at delivery and document any visible damage on the carrier paperwork immediately.
6) Automatic vs manual — not sure?
If you’re not sure whether your vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission, don’t worry — we can determine it instantly from your VIN. Some models were offered with both, and we’ll confirm which one matches your vehicle before quoting.
